The emergence of COVID variants continues to add fuel to sometimes heated conversations surrounding the ongoing pandemic, according to a Rutgers University professor. Some among the vaccinated argue variants develop in unvaccinated hosts, while some unvaccinated point the finger at looser restrictions for those with proof of vaccination. Dr. Reynold Panettieri, the Vice Chancellor of Translational Medicine at Rutgers, said the reality is more complex than that. “If you look at rates of infection in those who are vaccinated versus those who are not vaccinated, the factor there somewhere on the order of 100 times more likely to get infected if you’re not vaccinated,” Panettieri said. “I think there’s truth in both sides because there are breakthrough infections (among the vaccinated).
