Meet Current Members

Steven S. An, Ph.D., Principal Investigator
Prior to joining Rutgers, Dr. An held the position of Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University. At Hopkins, he had faculty appointments across three schools (School of Public Health, School of Engineering, and School of Medicine) in four academic departments, and was the recipient of the Discovery Awards (2015 & 2016) and the Catalyst Award (2017). Dr. An’s primary research is focused on the mechanobiology of living cells in health and disease. Dr. An has specific expertise in G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling and excitation-contraction coupling mechanisms of airway smooth muscle shortening in the context of obstructive lung disease.
While not in the lab, Dr. An enjoys traveling to “PARTS UNKNOWN”, exploring “BIZARRE FOODS”, and playing “STRAIGHT FLUSH” (2009 American Lung Association ‘Casino Night’ Champion).

Jordan Lee, Graduate Research Assistant
Jordan is a graduate student in the Joint Graduate Program in Toxicology at Rutgers University. She received her Bachelor’s in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and minor in Chemistry from Rutgers. Her research interests include epigenetics, cell metabolism, and lung mechanics. Jordan enjoys spending time with her dog, hiking, and getting ice cream.

Isha Dandekar, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Isha is currently a freshman at Rutgers Honors College studying Cell Biology and Neuroscience on the pre-med track. Her research interests include tissue engineering and cancer. Outside of school, Isha enjoys placing viola, riding horses, reading, and watching movies with friends.

Furqan Syed, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Furqan is an undergraduate student in the SEBS honors program studying Biological Sciences. He is interested in researching genome defense mechanisms and cancer, and wants to pursue oncology in the future. He loves reading, watching horror movies and true crime documentaries, going on spontaneous road trips, and spending time with friends and family.

Muhammad Khurram, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Muhammad is an undergraduate student in the School of Arts & Sciences Honors Program studying Cell Biology & Neuroscience. His research interests include cell signaling mechanisms and cancer. He hopes to attend medical school in the future. Outside of school, he enjoys playing the piano and traveling abroad.

Francesca Osborn, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Francesca is an undergraduate student at Rutgers Honors College studying Animal Biotechnology with a minor in Biochemistry. She is also involved in Douglass Residential College and is on the pre-medical track. She has a strong interest in leveraging immunology to create tangible therapies for patient care. She hopes to become a cardiologist or an oncologist in the future. Outside of the lab, she loves to travel, play volleyball with her friends, and drink bubble tea.

Rebecca Shen, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Rebecca is an undergraduate student at Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences studying Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and Linguistics on the pre-medicine track. She is interested in tissue and cell functions, particularly in the development and metastasis of cancer, and hopes to pursue a career as an oncological researcher or physician. Outside of the lab, she enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring new places.

Maxwell Bouffard, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Maxwell is an undergraduate student at the Rutgers Honors College pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry. He has a strong interest in genetics and oncology, and is fascinated by how mechanobiology and other metabolic processes influence disease. He is honored to be a part of this lab. Apart from academics, Maxwell enjoys playing the piano, swimming, exercising, and spending time with his family.

Lauren Man, Research Assistant
Lauren graduated from the School of Arts & Sciences studying Biological Sciences. She is currently in her gap year looking to gain more clinical experience as a medical scribe and to study for the MCAT. She is also continuing to research in the lab during her gap year. Her research interests include cancer and cell metabolism. In her free time, she enjoys playing board games and watching soccer.
